I started pickleball this past winter. I had played badminton growing up, so I hoped that I would have a little muscle memory on the hand/eye coordination. At first I could barely get the ball over the net or keep it in bounds. It didn't seem to matter to this group of amazing women. They encouraged me to keep coming back. I felt welcomed in a way I had not expected nor ever experienced. It felt safe and FUN. 90 minutes flew by and I kept coming. Soon friends invited me to play outside of the regular round robin slots and my husband and I started to play together and with other couples. Before I knew it, I was play 3-4 times/week. Each week more fun than the one before. My confidence grew and my circle of friends grew exponentially. Suddenly there was a large group of ladies of all ages and abilities meeting daily to play, to laugh and to build community.
People talk about the pickleball magic. This friendly community of people who are welcoming, fun and active. It is real and I for one look forward to my daily game and seeing who will show up to play with next. I have new friends who are younger, older or the same age as me. Some are just learning, and now I have the chance to return the favor that was given to me when I started. I can welcome them. I can play them and encourage them to keep coming. There is real magic in that.
If you are thinking of picking up the game , GO FOR IT! Try it. Get the proper shoes, comfy clothes (I love the Saltie Rose line), grab a paddle and prepare for some fun!
