How To Start Your Pickleball Journey
Starting anything new can be a mixed bag. There is the thrill of learning and exploration. There also can be a bit of anxiety or uncertainty about learning and performance. The lovely thing about pickleball is that the on-ramp is relatively short and easy! Even for those who have never played sports, following the ball, coordinating movements, and creating excitement are relatively simple. Here are a few tips to help you walk onto the pickleball court with confidence.
Conquering Uncertainty.
In general, engaging in something unknown can trigger anxiety, which can make it challenging to take that first step. But remember, you're not alone; even the most seasoned player was once new to the game. Every athlete begins as a novice, and the transformation journey is filled with joy, frustration, and triumph.
Knowing that we are by nature prone to be apprehensive, self-compassion and mindfulness techniques can counter those feelings of worry.
- Be kind to yourself, pretend you are giving your best friend advice, "Of course, you are nervous. You are going to do great!"
- Mindfulness techniques like deep breathing or visualization can also help calm nerves. Try inhaling deeply through the nose and exhaling through the mouth with an audible sound. Repeat until you feel a greater sense of calm.
- Embrace a growth mindset. Remind yourself that mistakes are learning opportunities.
- Pick a mantra. A word or phrase like PLAY, HAVE FUN, or LEARNING can help calm thoughts and help you be present.
Self-compassion, mindfulness, and the spirit of learning can transform the new pickleball adventure into a rewarding personal development journey.
Find a Beginners Group
We've heard it is difficult for beginners to find a comfortable place to play pickleball. Because of its popularity and quick learning curve, most social players and groups perform at an intermediate level.
Introductory Classes
Many communities offer introductory classes tailored for beginners, providing a structured environment for developing foundational skills. These lessons often come with experienced instructors who teach the sport's mechanics and instill a sense of camaraderie among participants. It can be worth $20 for a class or $100 for a series to learn the basics and gain confidence.
Open Play
Open play in pickleball is the easiest way to get to know a wide variety of players. It is a casual, organized time for pickleball players of all skill levels to play together without the pressure of competition. When starting, you might want to look for Open Play groups rated as beginners or have a DUPR rating below 3.0. Being with other beginners will enhance your sense of belonging, increase enjoyment, and provide invaluable opportunities for socializing. After all, pickleball is inherently social!
Social Media
Online resources are also great for learning and reinforcing basic strategies and strokes. Our favorite IG and FB tipster is @Tanner.Pickleball, his 60-second tips are easy to understand and lay the groundwork for future progress.
Show Up with the Right Pickleball Gear
The first few times you play pickleball, you can borrow a paddle from a friend or the club where you are taking a clinic. After a few times, demo a couple of different paddles to get an idea of which paddle feels good to you and is in your price range. Our favorite paddle is from PIKKL and retails under $150.
The right apparel can also significantly enhance safety and performance, making the learning experience more enjoyable. Wear court shoes and never wear running shoes. Many falls and injuries with beginners happen because of the wrong footwear. Our favorite pickleball shoe is from OluKai.
Unlike tennis, pickleball does not have long rallies from the baseline, and while a tennis skirt might be easy, it doesn't move and cover the quick, bending, and reaching movements of pickleball. Our Saltie Rose Shorts are the best for playing pickleball. You can find a matching outfit by adding a Tunic or Performance Top to complete your look. Designed in different lengths and fits, Saltie Rose women’s shorts with iphone pockets on both sides are court-ready. Lastly, carry your water bottle, paddle, snacks, and shoes in our Pickleball Tote.
Join the movement! Pickleball is more than just a sport. It's a community and a way of life.
