Help! My Pickleball Game is Getting Worse: Advice from the Experts

In a recent Facebook post, a woman asked for advice about her game, which she noticed was slipping. She wasn't the only one feeling this way—a friend who had been playing for a year shared a similar concern, feeling like her skills were actually getting worse. While play can vary daily, downturns that last can impact how you feel about yourself and showing up on the court. Here are a few expert tips to help you get back on track when your game starts to falter.

Take a Break - Changing the frequency of play or creating some space for other activities looks different for everyone. Reducing the number of days you are playing might offer just enough respite to re-energize and enjoy the game again. For others, stopping for a week or two may provide the needed reset.

Change Groups or Venues - A change of scenery can do wonders when we get into a routine that begins to feel like a rut. Playing with others whose games are unfamiliar can engage a different part of the game and brain. The beauty of Open Play in pickleball is its inclusivity, so don't worry that you don't know anyone. You will have new pickleball friends by the end of the session.

Evaluate Your Goals – One of the best things about pickleball is how quickly you can start playing and having fun. After just a few games, most people get the hang of the basic rules, the rally, and the kitchen. That early progress can make it feel like improvements will keep coming naturally. But for most players, the next step can feel like a real challenge, with plateaus to break through. Take some time to think about what you want from the game and how much you're willing to put into improving.

Consider Lessons, Clinics, and Drills - Many strategies and specific moves can help take your game to the next level. Most involve learning and practicing the new skill and gradual integration into your game. Our favorite online pro is Tanner Pickleball. His Under 60-Second Videos are just the right size to learn a specific skill or embrace a new idea. We particularly love his 3.5 tips with his mom. Additionally, taking a lesson, attending a clinic, or drilling with a friend can improve your on-court finesse. It is okay to be dedicated to improving your skills.

Develop a Growth Mindset - Research shows people think about their talents and abilities in two main ways: talents are set and therefore don’t change, or I can develop my skills and improve. Adopting a Pickleball growth mindset can create a positive attitude toward practice and learning. Coupling this with a self-compassion practice can really boost your confidence. So next time you have a bad day on the court, treat yourself like your own best friend and say, “It’s okay, you are learning something new.”

Check Your Equipment - The paddle you purchased when you first started playing may be holding you back. Check out our friends at PIKKL, where you’ll find a high-quality, raw carbon fiber paddle that’s affordable and designed to help you take your game to new heights. And remember, when it comes to pickleball, feeling good is key to playing your best!
